The sleeper train, beloved of thriller writers and art directors, is making a comeback in Britain. Serco, the operator of the Caledonian Sleeper night trains connecting London and Scotland, has revealed details of a £150m revamp, including en-suite cabins with double beds.

The clock tower perched above Hamburg's main train station was tolling midnight when I boarded the Borealis sleeper train in the autumn of 2014. During daylight hours, I had made the trip from Copenhagen - part ferry, part train - across the Baltic Sea, and now I was bound for Amsterdam.

An ode to the night train

In 1998, my father, a software engineer, took our family on a night train from Stockholm to Luleå, 50 miles south of the Arctic Circle. Back then, the price of one air ticket was the same as four inter-rail passes. There was a dining car with plush seats and a cinema.

Labour MEP calls on new transport commissioner to reverse decline in sleeper services

A Labour MEP today called on the new transport commissioner to do more to reverse the decline in European sleeper services after the outgoing commissioner ruled out action at EU level. Lucy Anderson MEP, Labour's European spokesperson on transport, wrote to Siim Kallas raising the issue of the downgrading and scrapping of overnight train services and asking the European Commisison to act to stop this.
